Practicing Blackjack Using Basic Strategy
July 26th, 2016 by mbj
In the last article, we talked about Basic Strategy and how it’s the optimal way of playing Live Blackjack. If you already have an idea on how it works then the next step is to put what you’ve just learned about it into practice. Of course, if you’re still not sure about what Basic Strategy is then you’re encouraged to research more about it first or more importantly, check out the article we referenced earlier.
Why Is Practice Important?
Now, before we detail how to effectively practice playing Blackjack, we’ll first need to ask ourselves: why is it important? Unless you’re a savant, it’s really hard to familiarize yourself with Basic Strategy even if you already have a grasp of its concepts. Much like any other sport/activity, you get to improve your decision making on real Blackjack games (online or offline) if you put in the time for practicing Basic Strategy. With that said, there are a number of ways to go about this. For now, we’ll go through one of the most efficient ways to do so.
(Note: this method of practicing can apply to both online and offline games. Practicing on online Blackjack games though is much more preferable thanks to the randomness of most gaming software).
Before You Practice
There are two things that you’ll need to do before you start practicing. The first would be to identify the rules of the Blackjack variation that you’d want to practice. As you may know, there are dozens of Blackjack variations and Basic Strategy will differ based on the rules of these variations. Once you’ve identified what these rules are (number of decks, whether it allows for surrenders or not, card bonuses, resplits, etc.), you can then proceed with getting your hands on a Blackjack Strategy Calculator.
Choosing A Blackjack Strategy Calculator
Now, there are dozens of strategy calculators that you can use but for now, you’ll only need to concern yourself with two. You can find many articles and strategies in books in Amazon for the best source.
On To Practice
After you’ve used either of these calculators to generate the Basic Strategy guide, you’re then ready to start practicing. To do so, just go to your online casino of choice and play the free demo/version of the Blackjack variation that you calculated for. In this manner, you get to actually play without having to pay. In addition, try to look for games that allow you to play multiple hands. This would help you further improve your decision making as well as give you a feel of what to expect when you’re already playing for real money. For the best results, players should also try to adhere strictly to the Basic Strategy even when they’re practicing.
